Freshen Up Your Home with Color
Deciding what colors to use in your home can be tricky. Trends are always changing and very few of us can afford to constantly redesign each and every one of our living spaces. However, there are tricks you can use to refresh your home for a fraction of a full interior design budget.Starting with a neutral base, you can easily use accessories and other design tricks to update your living spaces in order to coordinate with the season, trends, or your mood. Here are 9 simple ideas for how to freshen up your home with color.PILLOWSThere's a reason this tip is used so often. It can work wonders for a space and is super simple. Don't just swap out the pillow covers in your living room though. Go the next step and switch them out in your bedroom too. This update might not be seen by your guests, but your home is your sanctuary and should be all about fulfilling you and your family. The mini makeover will make you feel great every time you enter your bedroom and that makes it worth it.FRAME COLORFUL PRINTSAnother simple tip is to color coordinate some scraps of fabric from your latest project or photos from a recent trip. Don't have any great photos on hand? Take your camera (or phone) to the closest coffee shop, farmer's market or park in town and snap some shots of pretty things of the same hue. When putting these together, consider hanging them in groups of at least three.PAINT ACCESSORIESHave a bunch of knick knacks scattered here or there around your house? Gather these items together and spray paint them. You can paint different items the same color or similar items different colors. This will create a visually cohesive look for all of your little treasures.RESTYLE YOUR BOOKSHELFLooking for a place to put your newly restyled knick knacks? Try reorganizing a bookshelf. Switching out the items on your shelf for new pieces can really transform an entire room. Have a bunch of white items that are blending into the background? Consider painting the inside of your shelves a color that works with your space.USE WHAT NATURE GIVES YOUSpring is the best time to look to your garden for inspiration. And don't worry if you don't have a vase. There are plenty of creative ways you can display your flowers. The photo above uses empty wine glasses, but coffee cans, mason jars and other beverage bottles would work great too.DISPLAY YOUR GROCERIESGo a step further and use your weekly grocery shopping trip to liven up your kitchen. Using baskets, trays, or crates to display your non-refrigerated fruits and veggies makes a pretty statement, but also acts as off the counter storage.FOCUS ON YOUR FLOORI love our wool rugs from Overstock.com. When Eleanor was born we started shopping smarter and decided to go with natural fibers only. We discovered that Overstock's prices are very reasonable and they have a great selection. That helps because when we moved into the new house, we needed a rug for every room without carpet - that's 5 total. I think we paid around $1100 for all 5 ranging in size from 5' x 8' to 9' x 12'. It's a lot, but not nearly as bad when you think that 9' x 12' rug from Pottery Barn would have cost at least that for just one!NEW BATH/KITCHEN TOWELSIt's amazing what refreshing your bath and kitchen towels can do, not only for your space, but also for the enjoyment you get from using them. It's time for me to do this in our home again so I'm on the hunt for great bath and kitchen towels. Let me know in the comments if you have a favorite one.SWITCH OUT HARDWAREYes, changing out cabinet pulls is a great way to spruce up an outdated kitchen, but it's also a great way to brighten up an already updated space. Just check out the beautiful cabinet pulls above from Anthropologie.com. They could easily liven up a neutral kitchen or bath. What do you think?
