DIY Wall Art for the Nursery
Well, I'm at the age for a baby boom with my friends. All these babies means showers and gifts, but since my pocketbook is not supporting a lavish lifestyle right now, I'm working on more sentimental gifts. When I found out my friend was planning on a forest theme for her baby's room, I knew I could make some fun wall art that would work well with the space. Here's how I created DIY wall art for the nursery.I was inspired by this transportation wall art from Land of Nod and decided to mimic the idea with some camping icons.
It was a pretty easy project, but took a little time to put it all together. I started with finding some free icons online. They were listed as free for personal use and since I was not planning to sell the pieces, it worked for me. When you are looking for icons, I recommend searching for vector or .png files. These types of files are easier to re-size without pixelating. Do a Google search or check out iconfinder.com or freevectordownload.com to find icons for your project. I re-sized my files in Photoshop and added bright colors - orange, blue, yellow, and green.Once the icons were set, I had them printed out as 5" x 7" at target so they would be high quality and glossy. Then I went to work on the 8" x 10" frames. I wanted white frames, but could only find black at the local craft store, so I painted them with 3-4 coats of simple acrylic paint.
Then I tested different options - colorful mats with colored icons on white background, or white mats with white icons on colorful backgrounds.
I liked both of the blue options, but not so much on the green ones so I tried it with orange. I liked both of these, but in the end choose the white mats. I loved how clean it looked with the frame.
Ta da! I completely forgot to take a photo of all four finished together, but thankfully my friend sent me a few photos of the art hung on the walls.
Truth be told, the night before her shower, I got really nervous that she would not like my gift. All of a sudden it felt really personal and since it wasn't on her registry, I almost chickened out. Thankfully she loved it as much as I did!Oh, and what was the final cost? It totaled around $25.00 for all four pictures!
